7 Things you can do to prevent a stroke

Stroke is preventable. Up to 80% of strokes could be prevented through healthy lifestyle changes and working with your health care team to control health conditions that raise your risk for stroke.

Even though you had a stroke before, these seven things can help you to prevent the second stroke attack.

So, let's take action to prevent a stroke.

1. Lower blood pressure

Maintain a blood pressure of less than 135/85 mmHg. But for some, a less aggressive goal (such as 140/90) may be more appropriate. Check with your doctor, goals that best for you and take blood pressure medication as instructed.

2. Lose weight

While an ideal BMI is 25 or less, that may not be realistic for you. Lose weight slowly until you reach an ideal BMI. Work with your doctor to create a personal weight loss strategy. Healthy eating and physical activity are sustainable ways to lose weight instead of a crash diet and aggressive detox plan.

Healthy BMI helps you to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as stoke. You can achieve a healthy body weight by following a healthy diet.

5. Treat atrial fibrillation

If you have atrial fibrillation get it treated. Visit your doctor regularly to address the issue.
